Pupkin Production was founded in 1994 by two attendants of the cinema course held by Nanni Moretti, Rita Rognoni (producer) and Gianni Zanasi (director) with the aim of producing “Nella Mischia”, first film by Gianni Zanasi, who in 1995 participated at Cannes Film Festival in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section and was well received by Italian and foreign critics.
Following this experience the two associates joined their strengths to create movies with an international imprint that portray today’s society from an original point of view in an involving and emotional way.
In order to broaden their competences the two associates have worked for some years also on other projects.
Rita Rognoni currently has the role of executive producer in the IBC Movies society of Beppe Caschetto and in 2013 founded with him Pupkin Movie, a society specialised in executive production: Rita has actively produced many movies for the cinema and TV series.
Gianni Zanasi directed in 1999 “A domani”, in competition at Venice Film Festival, produced by Tangram.
In the year 2000 Pupkin produces the feature film “Fuori di me” by Gianni Zanasi, in competition at Torino Festival and out of competition at the Locarno Film Festival.
Pupkin has also produced several documentaries, among them “La vita è breve ma la giornata è lunghissima” directed by Gianni Zanasi and Lucio Pellegrini and Special Mention by the jury at the Venice Film Festival, “Il terzo occhio” by Susanna Nicchiarelli.
The year 2007 was an important year for Pupkin because it produced with IBC Movie “Non pensarci” by Gianni Zanasi, out of competition at Venice Film Festival, winner of many awards such as a David di Donatello for the Best Supporting Actor. In 2009 the Tv series “Non Pensarci” was made taken from the movie, produced by Pupkin for FOX and La7 channels.
The international success of “Non pensarci” proved that the two associates had undertaken the right editorial approach which led Pupkin to create in the following years several films, and become one of the most innovative societies in the Italian market as shows the success of Zanasi’s latest movie “La felicità è un sistema complesso”, and the participation of the feature film “Fiore” by Claudio Giovannesi at Cannes Film Festival 2016 in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section.
The cinema debut by Alessandro Lunardelli “Il mondo fino in fondo”, filmed in Italy, Spain, Chile and presented in 2013 at the Rome FIlm Festival in the section Alice nella città was positively received by the critics and distributed abroad by the German society Medialuna
